The State Department raised its advisory for Kenya to Level 3, reconsider travel, on October 19, citing health, violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping, political unrest, and road safety risks. The health concern follows a confirmed imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola, in Nairobi, and the CDC currently recommends Level 1 health precautions for Kenya. Several areas of Kenya already carry the highest warning, Level 4. In France, the U.S. Embassy in Paris issued a security alert after violent demonstrations on October 17 led to partial curfews in several cities, and more protests are expected on Saturday, October 24. France’s advisory remains at Level 2, and Americans are urged to avoid demonstrations, expect public transit disruptions, confirm flight times with their airlines, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. For China, the State Department added a wrongful-detention indicator to its advisory on October 19, flagging that Americans can be detained or prevented from leaving the country, though the overall level stays at Level 2. Check the current advisory for your destination before you book or travel, since these notices can change quickly.

The Yukon’s Golden Circle Route loops roughly 360 miles through Whitehorse, Haines Junction, Haines, and Skagway, tracing the path gold rush prospectors once took from Alaska’s coast to the Yukon interior. Plan on three to four days, since some of the best sights sit between the towns, including alpine lakes, the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, which holds the largest concentration of bald eagles in the world, and Kluane National Park and Reserve, home to one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears in North America. The ferry crossing from Skagway to Haines offers a chance to spot humpback whales, orcas, and sea lions, and the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad runs scenic rides behind a 1947 steam locomotive. The route is remote, so pack provisions, reserve your ferry crossing in advance, and bring your passport, though a passport card works for land crossings. June through September is the best driving window, with September bringing early fall colors and a chance at the northern lights, which makes this one worth sketching into next summer’s calendar.
Until next time,
