💰 WHERE CAN MY MONEY TAKE ME?

✈️ What $2,500 Can Buy Two People in Europe This November

Think $2,500 isn’t enough for two people to take a real European vacation anymore?

November might change your mind.

Airfare drops, summer crowds disappear and hotels enter shoulder-season pricing in many of Europe’s biggest cities. So this week, we gave ourselves $2,500 total for two people and asked:

How much of a European vacation can we actually get?

We used New York as our sample departure point and looked at current November airfare. Here are three trips that can come surprisingly close — flights, hotel and actual things to do included.

Gran Via from above, Madrid, Spain.

Why we'd pick it: Your money doesn't just get you to Europe. There's enough left to actually enjoy being there.

Budget: ~$2,300–$2,500 for two

That leaves enough room for airfare, five nights in Madrid and, importantly, a trip where you don’t have to spend the entire time saying, “We probably shouldn’t.”

What we'd budget:

✈️ Flights for two: ~$920
🏨 5 nights: ~$700–$800
🍷 Food & drinks: ~$350
🎨 Prado Museum + other attractions: ~$60
🚆 Day trip to Toledo: ~$80
🚇 Metro + airport transportation: ~$75
💰 Remaining buffer: ~$200+

The trip: Five nights in Madrid, tapas and wine, the Prado, Retiro Park, wandering Malasaña and La Latina, plus a day trip to medieval Toledo.

August sunrise at Miradouro de Santa Luzia 🌞

Why we'd pick it: November gives you a shot at Europe without quite committing to European winter.

Budget: ~$2,400–$2,500 for two

November is one of those months when Lisbon starts looking particularly tempting: fewer tourists, generally milder temperatures than much of Europe and a budget that can stretch noticeably further than it does during summer.

What we'd budget:

✈️ Flights for two: ~$860
🏨 5 nights: ~$750
🍤 Food, wine & too many pastéis de nata: ~$350
🏰 Day trip to Sintra: ~$100
🚋 Local transportation: ~$100
🌅 One splurge experience: ~$150
💰 Remaining buffer: ~$190

The trip: Five nights in Lisbon, seafood dinners, sunset viewpoints, wandering Alfama, a full day exploring Sintra and enough money left for one memorable splurge.

Why we'd pick it: You're squeezing one of Europe's biggest bucket-list cities into the same budget many couples could easily spend on a long weekend in the U.S.

Budget: ~$2,500

Rome is the one where you’ll want to watch airfare and hotel prices a little more closely — but if the dates line up, $2,500 can still get two people there without turning the trip into an extreme-budget challenge.

What we'd budget:

✈️ Flights for two: ~$1,030
🏨 5 nights: ~$700–$750
🍝 Food & wine: ~$350
🏛️ Colosseum + Roman Forum: ~$50
🎨 Vatican Museums: ~$50
🚇 Transportation: ~$75
💰 Total: Right around $2,300–$2,500

The trip: Five nights in Rome with pasta, wine, the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Pantheon, Piazza Navona and plenty of aimless wandering between them.

And yes, tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain is still free.

🏆 So, where would you spend the $2,500?

For the most vacation for your money: Madrid
For weather + food + scenery: Lisbon
For the biggest bucket-list payoff: Rome

The bigger lesson?

$2,500 isn't necessarily a “cheap trip” budget. Travel in the right month, to the right place, and it can still buy two people five nights in Europe — flights included.

Want to make your travel budget go even further?

Next week: We’re giving ourselves another budget and seeing just how far it can take us.

Prices are estimates based on sample airfare and travel budgets at the time of writing. Airfare, hotels and other travel costs can change quickly depending on departure city and dates.

Münster‘s Prinzipalmarkt

Germany's regional rail pass might be one of Europe's most underrated travel hacks. For one flat monthly price, it covers buses, trams, ferries, and regional trains across the whole country, and the only trade-off is that fast long-distance trains are left out. That limit turns out to be part of the fun, since changing trains along the way lands you in towns you would never have planned for. Travelers who have used it point to Münster, where Italian-style porticoes and a beloved bakery make it easy to lose a few days, and Görlitz, a film-favorite town packed with five centuries of architecture. Cologne's cocktail bars, Berlin's old airfield turned kite-flying park, and an e-bike ride through the Black Forest round out the list. Pick a region, grab a pass, and let the transfers surprise you.

Waitangi, Nzl - Feb 06 2025:Group of Maori people dancing a traditional dance on Waitangi Day, the national day of New Zealand, marks the anniversary of the initial signing—on 6 February 1840—of the Treaty of Waitangi

New Zealand packs so much variety into two islands that the hardest part is deciding where to begin. Around Rotorua, local families welcome visitors with traditional dance performances and a feast cooked in the ground, a warm way to connect with Māori culture early in a trip. For something more rugged, the country's Great Walks range from beach-fringed coastal tracks to a volcanic day crossing, though they cap visitor numbers, so booking ahead is the move. Stewart Island adds a rarer thrill, with twilight tours that give you a real chance of spotting a wild kiwi, while in Fiordland a sunrise kayak through Milford Sound gets you the waterfalls and cliffs before the day-trip boats arrive. Mix one cultural stop, one big walk, and one wildlife night, and you have a trip plan worth chasing.
