A new study set out to find where the Mediterranean lifestyle actually costs the least, and the answer isn't where most people would guess. Tangier, Morocco topped the list of 25 coastal cities across Southern Europe and North Africa, with rent averaging just $415 a month and total living costs under $600. Spain's Almeria and Alicante both landed in the top five, each combining low costs with near-perfect walkability scores and dozens of beaches within reach. Greece's Heraklion rounded out the leaders, with rents under $600 and tavernas serving full meals for around $15. The pattern across every city on the list is the same one that has long drawn European retirees to the region: strong sunshine hours, walkable streets, and a cost of living that stretches further than it does almost anywhere else with a coastline this good.

Azerbaijan doesn't come up often in digital nomad conversations, but that's starting to change. The country's parliament has already approved legislative groundwork for a digital nomad visa, with a rollout window set for 2027, and while the application portal isn't live yet, quite a lot is already on paper. The proposed income threshold sits at roughly $3,060 a month, and successful applicants could receive up to three years of temporary residence, renewable for further three-year stretches. Baku, the capital, makes the case on its own merits: a central one-bedroom apartment runs about $540 a month, and the UNESCO-listed Old City sits alongside a growing coworking scene and a long Caspian waterfront. One thing worth knowing before booking a scouting trip: the US State Department currently classifies Azerbaijan as a Level 3 destination, citing regional security concerns near the Armenian and Iranian borders, though that designation is about the wider geopolitical picture rather than everyday safety in Baku itself.
