Aerial view of residential and commercial area in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

Most nomads on Penang settle in George Town, a walkable UNESCO World Heritage Site where most of the island’s cafes and coworking spaces sit. Gurney Drive and Pulau Tikus suit anyone who wants modern condos and malls close by, while Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi trade that for a quieter, beachier routine. Between work sessions you can wander the street art, clan houses, and temples, then eat at hawker stalls serving char kway teow and assam laksa. English is widely spoken, crime is rated low, and the DE Rantau Nomad Pass lets eligible remote workers stay for 12 months with the option to renew. One study put a month at around $950 with rent included, though that is an estimate, and housing choices, health insurance, and spending habits will move it. Expect heat and humidity year-round with occasional haze, and plan weekend escapes, since low-cost flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok are right there.

This 2017 photograph depicted a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Quarantine Station, Public Health Officer, as she was conducting inspections of CDC-regulated items. This type of activity takes place at 18-United States international airports, and land ports of entry, where most international travelers arrive. In this image, captured at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Enya, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) dog, had sniffed out a possible banned item in baggage claim.

The 3-1-1 rule still applies across the US, with containers capped at 3.4 ounces and everything in one quart-size bag, but TSA currently lets ten kinds of full-size liquids through. Prescription medication tops the list, along with medically necessary items like inhalers and insulin, and larger bottles of contact lens solution, though some formulas can set off alarms, so checked bags are the safer call. Frozen ice packs and water bottles qualify as long as they are frozen solid, and baby formula and food are covered too. Duty-free bottles are fine on inbound international flights when the retailer seals them in a tamper-evident bag, you bought them within 48 hours, and you kept the receipt. Declare anything oversized to an officer before screening and put it in its own bin, and TSA expects the limit to be lifted entirely in the coming years.
