How This Solo Nomad Crashed Switzerland's Secret Party
Alyssa never expected to find herself sweating in sub-zero temperatures, covered in confetti, and playing makeshift percussion on an empty schnapps bottle. But that's exactly where Switzerland took her.
After three years living in the pristine, clock-work precision of Zurich, Alina ventured to Luzern for Fasnacht—Switzerland's answer to Carnival—and discovered the country's alter ego.
"It's 5 AM on 'Dirty Thursday,' and I'm standing in medieval streets when an explosion of noise hits," she recalls. "Hundreds of costumed locals emerge playing deliberately off-key brass music, and suddenly everyone's dancing."
By day, Fasnacht presents a family-friendly facade—elaborate parades with handcrafted floats winding through narrow streets. By night, it transforms into a network of pop-up bars and impromptu street parties where Swiss reserve dissolves completely.
For solo female travelers, Luzern is as safe as it is lively. "I never felt uncomfortable, even during late-night celebrations," Alina notes. "The lack of corporate fingerprints is refreshing. Everything feels authentic, from the DIY costumes to the underground party spaces."
For visitors, she recommends embracing the chaos—wear layers, bring cash for street food, and most importantly, participate. "The costume isn't optional. It's your admission ticket to conversations and experiences you'd never have otherwise."
