I love steam trains and out walking in Worcestershire beside the River Severn heard a steam train on the Severn Valley Railway. It was spring, the trees had burst into life and in a small clearing, the sun shone through the tree canopy. The train approached and I quickly took this shot. It took me straight back to my childhood when steam ruled. just look at the colours of engine and coaches fitting perfectly with the colours of spring!

Amazing townscape in Larnaca, Cyprus.

Portugal and Spain get most of the Europe-for-nomads attention, but a new comparison of seven popular remote work bases put Cyprus on top. The island earned points for how easily newcomers settle in, widespread English, and long-term residency potential, with Malta close behind and Portugal and Spain rounding out the top four. Living costs were the one area that pulled its score down, though they still come in below typical US levels, with rent making up most of the monthly budget. In return you get roughly 400 miles of coastline, hiking and biking trails, and some of Europe’s cleanest bathing waters. One thing worth knowing is that the ranking was built around UK-based remote workers, so visa and tax details will look different for Americans. If you’re weighing an island base, add Cyprus to the shortlist and check how the residency rules apply to you.

The Camino de Santiago has a reputation as a test of endurance, but a group of friends mostly in their sixties and seventies found it works best when you slow way down. They took the popular final stretch of the French Way from Sarria at a leisurely pace, with a rest day midway for laundry and coffee, and set off mid-morning to avoid the early walking rush. The real secret was logistics, since a baggage transfer service moved their bigger bags ahead each morning and left them with just a light day pack. Private rooms and apartments beat bunk beds, and grocery runs kept costs in check. They also trained for a year, broke in their shoes early, and had their packs professionally fitted. At the cathedral in Santiago they picked up a free certificate of completion, then headed on to the coast at Finisterre to celebrate. If a long walk has been on your wish list, this one proves there’s no wrong pace.
